Raised in rural central Alabama, Caroline Erb is a 2012 graduate of the Alabama School of Fine Arts and is currently earning her BFA from the University of West Florida in Pensacola. Utilizing drawing, ceramics, and fiber art, Erb explores her relationship with herself, others, and the natural environment of the Southeast United States. In November 2022, she represented UWF Digital Ceramics at the Pensacola Maker Faire. Upon graduation in the spring of 2023, Erb hopes to begin working as a full-time ceramic artist creating unique functional objects for people to enjoy in their daily lives.
When utilizing ceramics – hand building, wheel throwing, or 3D printing – I often reference natural forms, like shells and chrysalises, that humans have emotionally connected to for millennia. A priority of my work is to highlight the interconnectedness of humans with all other forms of life, particularly those we assume to be very different from ourselves. I aspire for people to stop and look at my work in the way one might be arrested by a unique seashell along the beach or an alien-like mushroom on a forest trail – to spark a moment of wonder and curiosity.
